Add Up the Damage.

Add Up the Damage

Does anyone know where George W. Bush is?

You don’t hear much from him anymore. The last image most of us remember is of the president ducking a pair of size 10s that were hurled at him in Baghdad.

We’re still at war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Israel is thrashing the Palestinians in Gaza. And the U.S. economy is about as vibrant as the 0-16 Detroit Lions.

But hardly a peep have we heard from George, the 43rd.

When Mr. Bush officially takes his leave in three weeks (in reality, he checked out long ago), most Americans will be content to sigh good riddance. I disagree. I don’t think he should be allowed to slip quietly out of town. There should be a great hue and cry — a loud, collective angry howl, demonstrations with signs and bullhorns and fiery speeches — over the damage he’s done to this country.

This is the man who gave us the war in Iraq and Guantánamo and torture and rendition; who turned the Clinton economy and the budget surplus into fool’s gold; who dithered while New Orleans drowned; who trampled our civil liberties at home and ruined our reputation abroad; who let Dick Cheney run hog wild and thought Brownie was doing a heckuva job.

The Bush administration specialized in deceit. How else could you get the public (and a feckless Congress) to go along with an invasion of Iraq as an absolutely essential response to the Sept. 11 attacks, when Iraq had had nothing to do with the Sept. 11 attacks?

Exploiting the public’s understandable fears, Mr. Bush made it sound as if Iraq was about to nuke us: “We cannot wait,” he said, “for the final proof — the smoking gun that could come in the form of a mushroom cloud.

He then set the blaze that has continued to rage for nearly six years, consuming more than 4,000 American lives and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis. (A car bomb over the weekend killed two dozen more Iraqis, many of them religious pilgrims.) The financial cost to the U.S. will eventually reach $3 trillion or more, according to the Nobel laureate economist Joseph Stiglitz.

A year into the war Mr. Bush was cracking jokes about it at the annual dinner of the Radio and Television Correspondents Association. He displayed a series of photos that showed him searching the Oval Office, peering behind curtains and looking under the furniture. A mock caption had Mr. Bush saying: “Those weapons of mass destruction have got to be somewhere.”

And then there’s the Bush economy, another disaster, a trapdoor through which middle-class Americans can plunge toward the bracing experiences normally reserved for the poor and the destitute.

Mr. Bush traveled the country in the early days of his presidency, promoting his tax cut plans as hugely beneficial to small-business people and families of modest means. This was more deceit. The tax cuts would go overwhelmingly to the very rich.

The president would give the wealthy and the powerful virtually everything they wanted. He would throw sand into the regulatory apparatus and help foster the most extreme income disparities since the years leading up to the Great Depression. Once again he was lighting a fire. This time the flames would engulf the economy and, as with Iraq, bring catastrophe.

If the U.S. were a product line, it would be seen now as deeply damaged goods, subject to recall.

There seemed to be no end to Mr. Bush’s talent for destruction. He tried to hand the piggy bank known as Social Security over to the marauders of the financial sector, but saner heads prevailed.

In New Orleans, the president failed to intervene swiftly and decisively to aid the tens of thousands of poor people who were very publicly suffering and, in many cases, dying. He then compounded this colossal failure of leadership by traveling to New Orleans and promising, in a dramatic, floodlit appearance, to spare no effort in rebuilding the flood-torn region and the wrecked lives of the victims.

He went further, vowing to confront the issue of poverty in America “with bold action.”

It was all nonsense, of course. He did nothing of the kind.

The catalog of his transgressions against the nation’s interests — sins of commission and omission — would keep Mr. Bush in a confessional for the rest of his life. Don’t hold your breath. He’s hardly the contrite sort.

He told ABC’s Charlie Gibson: “I don’t spend a lot of time really worrying about short-term history. I guess I don’t worry about long-term history, either, since I’m not going to be around to read it.”

The president chuckled, thinking — as he did when he made his jokes about the missing weapons of mass destruction — that there was something funny going on.

The First 100 Days.

Over the last eight years, the Bush administration has systematically dismantled some of the most important rights and protections in the United States Constitution. In the first 100 days of office, the next president can, often with the stroke of a pen, restore, protect, and expand the fundamental rights on which our nation was founded. It is up to all of us to see that he does.

The Center for Constitutional Rights' 100 Days Campaign focuses on the harm done by previous administrations and the hopes we have for making the country a better place for all.

Over the last eight years, the Bush administration set out to dismantle our most important constitutional protections and showed deep disregard for international and domestic law. CCR is here to stand in its way. In June 2008, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a resounding affirmation of the Constitution in Boumediene v. Bush. Even as we prepare to move forward on this victory for our clients, we have launched a new media and educational campaign titled Beyond Guantanamo: Restore the Constitution.

This is a sustained effort to neutralize the Bush legacy and restore the Constitution. As part of the project, we've created the 100 Days campaign, outlinling ways the new president can restore, protect and exapnd our fundamental rights in his first 100 days in office.

Use this link to download the overview brochure, or view the issue areas below to learn more.

END TORTURE, RENDITION AND ILLEGAL DETENTION.

From Guantanamo to Abu Ghraib, from secret CIA “black sites” to proxy detention in other countries that torture, the U.S. has created a system of illegal detentions and justified the use of torture with direct approval from the highest levels of government.

To ensure they could operate with impunity, they tried to twist the law to strip habeas corpus, to redefine the meaning of the word torture, to keep their deeds out of view of the courts and the public, and to create sham proceedings as window dressing.

In the first 100 days of his administration, President Obama must act to ...

  • Close Guantanamo and resettle Guantanamo’s refugees safely in a country where they do not risk persecution or torture.
  • End torture and issue an executive order prohibiting the use of torture.
  • Close all secret detention sites and CIA “black sites.”
  • End the use of extraordinary rendition and launch a DOJ investigation into its use.
  • End the use in any court of evidence obtained through torture.
  • Officially reject all the legal memos, executive orders and signing statements that justify the use of torture.
ABOLISH PREVENTATIVE DETENTION.

The government has found alternative ways to hold people indefinitely without charge, sometimes simply because they believe the person might do something in the future. They have used immigration detention to target certain groups based on racial or religious profiling, abused federal grand jury conspiracy charges, and held activists on the vague charge of “material support.”

In the first 100 days of his administration, President Obama must act to ...

  • Appoint officials who will not abuse the material witness statute, immigration law, grand juries, and conspiracy charges to suppress dissenters.
  • Pledge to veto any legislation creating preventive detention or national security courts as alternatives to the existing criminal justice system.
  • Work to repeal repressive legislation like the Patriot Act and the Anti-Terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act.
PROTECT DISSENT.

Increasingly, political dissent is treated as terrorism. Material support laws that criminalize speech and political activity, the Patriot Act, the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, and the Homegrown Terrorism Act all allow the government to target activists and stifle dissent.

Joint Terrorism Task Forces encourage large-scale stop-and-frisk nets; special registration and massive immigration roundups target entire communities; anti-war groups are infiltrated by government agents; and a sweeping new DNA database takes samples from anyone who is arrested, regardless of conviction.

In the first 100 days of his administration, President Obama must act to ...

  • Work to repeal the Patriot Act and other repressive legislation.
  • Make the FBI strictly adhere to surveillance guidelines and repeal new surveillance guidelines that allow increased surveillance of activists.
  • End ICE raids and the federalization of law enforcement.
  • Open DOJ investigations into related government misconduct.
AMEND THE WAR POWERS ACT.

The Bush administration illegally invaded Iraq, occupies Afghanistan and has threatened Iran, Syria and Venezuela. It has abused the Authorization to Use Military Force (AUMF) and, like many administrations before it, ignored certain Constitutional and international law requirements before attacking another nation.

In the first 100 days of his administration, President Obama must act to ...

  • Withdraw from Iraq and end the occupation.
  • Work to amend the War Powers Act to explicitly prohibit Executive acts of war without previous Congressional authorization.
  • End abuse of the AUMF.

LIMIT STATE SECRETS PRIVILEGE.

Secrecy and evasion have been the hallmarks of the Bush administration. They have classified more documents than any administration in history, restricted responses to FOIA requests, and argued to extend privilege to protect government officials and military contractors from being held liable for illegal actions like torture and wrongful death. Again and again, they have invoked the State Secrets privilege to avoid scrutiny in court, oversight, and legal responsibility for their actions.

In the first 100 days of his administration, President Obama must act to ...
  • Investigate, prosecute, and hold criminal trials to expose the crimes carried out by officials and contractors.
  • Propose new State Secrets legislation that creates a mechanism for civil courts to hear classified matters.
  • Issue new executive orders that reverse Bush’s expansion of the State Secrets privilege and over-classification of documents.
  • Work with Congress to pass legislation making it clear military contractors are accountable for their abuses.
STOP WARRANTLESS WIRETAPPING

It used to be true that for the government to spy on people in the U.S. it had to get a warrant. In cases involving an international party, they went before the FISA court, which almost never refused a request and even granted requests retroactively, allowing the government to begin spying immediately and ask permission later. Not content, Bush issued a secret executive order in 2002 authorizing the NSA to wiretap Americans without a warrant, using the AUMF as justification. After the program was exposed, the administration secured immunity from Congress for the telecommunications companies that participated.

In the first 100 days of his administration, President Obama must act to ...
  • Work to repeal the Patriot Act, FISA Amendments Act, and telecom immunity.
  • Repudiate Bush executive orders supporting warrantless wiretapping and the legal opinions used to support them.
  • Pledge to end all secret surveillance programs not reviewed by either the courts or Congressional committees.
ROLL BACK EXECUTIVE POWER.

The last eight years have seen an unprecedented expansion of executive power. Presidential signing statements on legislation passed by Congress invalidated the separation of powers and created an unauthorized line item veto. The so-called Unitary Executive theory, the “War on Terror” paradigm, immunity, impunity and lawlessness—all destroyed the balance of power in a coordinated assault on the Constitution.

President Obama must repudiate the crimes of the past and be a guardian of our existing rights: abortion rights, racial justice, protection from government spying, and all the rest. But he must also expand the Constitution to address health care, housing, economic rights, and much, much more.

In the first 100 days of his administration, President Obama must act to ...
  • Repudiate the “unitary” presidency.
  • Renounce the use of signing statements to alter legislation.
  • Appoint officials and judges who will uphold the Constitution in all respects.
  • Recognize and respect international law and join the International Criminal Court.

Transition & Hope

Transition and Hope

As another year draws to a close, there are some important transitions ahead of us. Not just transitions to a new administration, but also economically, politically and culturally. Many hoped that the changes would signify overwhelming positive steps for our country, and that we would enter a new era, as promised during the campaign. I would like for this to be true, but based on the continuity so far, I would not be surprised to see America stay on the same course of failed monetary and economic policies. The course has been set for several decades, and in reality there is little the new administration could do to fix things without actually making them worse. But I expect them to try. The only real solutions involve allowing the market to liquidate the debt and malinvestment. The political reality is that this is not going to happen. Through the coming months and years, our nation will find itself at many crossroads, as all manner of socialist, corporatist, protectionist and nationalist initiatives will be thrown at the economy to see if anything will reflate it. Some of these so-called fixes will be enacted amidst much outcry, as with the $700 billion TARP bailout, which the public was right to oppose. About half of that money is gone without a trace, with no accountability, and the economy is no better off for it.

Others, such as the proposed new $800 billion plus economic stimulus the new administration is already clamoring for, might have limited public support, as many will find the prospect of receiving a government check a little too tempting to object to. After all, Wall Street got a bailout. What about the little guy? Everything will be attempted by government in the short run to remedy the worsening situation – everything, that is, but freedom. Therefore, everything attempted will fail.

Unfortunately, government will continue to consolidate and abuse power at an accelerated pace. Government will get bigger, in the short term, and as monetary policy goes from irresponsible to absurd, I have every expectation that we will soon shift from some prices falling to an inflationary nightmare.
But there is hope. As all these attempts fail, more people will demand freedom, and see that it is the only way. Government can only get so big before the country goes broke. It is regrettable that we keep forgetting what history has shown over and over to be true, because truly, it is a hard and destructive lesson to keep learning. Perhaps it is just something that every generation has to learn for itself? The political and cultural changes that come from these economic transitions will be key to the direction and quality of life for future generations. But I am hopeful because of the strength of the American people and the increased number of voices recognizing that liberty really is the only way to peace and prosperity.

Happy Holidays!

Wishing you all a VERY happy holiday season!

Yeah, I just sent a holiday message from myself and a CHAIR - that's right! And if I can manage this, do the world - and yourselves - a favor & try taking one of these notions for a spin...

1) Try to make something instead of buying, Buying, BUYING. It may be dorky, but even dorkhood is more memorable than store-bought!

2) Try and donate your time to people in need-even if it's but one hour...

3) If you can't donate your time, try donating some things to a local charity...

4) Try and remember the things for which you are grateful, no matter how your situation might seem, presently...

I recently went to a wake where this poem was read:

The Dash - by: Linda Ellis

I read of a man who stood to speak-
At the funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on her tombstone-
From the beginning to the end.

He noted that first came the date of her birth.
And spoke the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years.

For that dash represents all the time
That she spent alive on earth.
And now only those who loved her
Know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not how much we own;
The cars, the house, the cash,
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard.
Are there things you’d like to change?
For you never know how much time is left,
That can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough,
To consider what’s true and real.
And always try to understand
The way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger,
And show appreciation more
And love the people in our lives
Like we’ve never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect,
And more often wear a smile.
Remembering that this special dash
Might only last a little while.

So, when your eulogy is being read,
With your life’s actions to rehash
Would you be proud of the things they say
About how you spent your dash?

An Open Letter to Naomi Wolf
Photograph: "Stop Bitching & Start a Revolution" A. Golden, eyewash design - c. 2006.

"There are 10 steps to close down a democratically functioning society -a blueprint that ALL 'would-be dictators' have followed." ~ Naomi Wolf.

Such a blueprint exists for Revolution as well.

We don't usually think of it this way, but the Founding Fathers used many non-violent protests before engaging the British in battle: The Boston Tea Party, petitions to parliament, stamp tax protests and demonstrations.

Another part of the 'blueprint' is information. The Founding Fathers wrote books, ("Common Sense", "The Rights of Man", etc), newspaper articles, and published, published, published, letters to statesmen and diplomats, leaflets, etc.

Starting with these two points, VoteStrike.com is calling upon citizens to stop funding their own destruction:

Seventeen Simple Non-Violent Resistance steps to stop fueling the money changers and corporate controllers of our great country.

1. Stop using credit cards - every transaction generates an automatic 1-2% fee to the banks from the store you're buying from. Also, stop using bank ATM's which generate extra fees to your account.

2. BOYCOTT Mobil/Exxon, Shell, Texaco, Chevron, BP - use small independent stations. Also, REDUCE GAS CONSUMPTION. We MUST stop fueling the original BIG MONEY MONOPOLIZERS! Learn to be a http://www.hypermiling.com/.

3. Do your very best to stop using and throwing away PLASTIC! - It's a petroleum derivative. Buy milk in cartons. Recycle every bit of plastic you must use and return all plastic bags to the grocery store, including plastic bread bags and what your newspapers are wrapped with.

4. CANCEL cable television. (WE ARE TOTALLY ADDICTED TO 350 CHANNELS of SPORTS, MOVIES, PORN, NEWS. And as long as they can entertain us, we have no need to think.)

5. MOVE MONEY OUT OF BIG INTERNATIONAL FRANCHISED BANKS: Bank of America; HSBC (Bank of China); CITIBANK/CHASE, etc. Move to local credit unions or smaller local banks. Keep cash at home, at least to cover immediate expenses for a few months, in a safe deposit box.

6. STOP DONATING MONEY TO MOVEON, ACLU, politicians, mega- churches - Instead, donate food directly to pantries or money directly to people you know that need it. Cut out the middlemen that are taking millions and using it to gain power, not to 'do good'! Help a poor person or relative weatherproof their home or give them energy efficient light bulbs.

7. CUT ENERGY USE AT HOME AND AT WORK. Best thing people can do against big oil and dirty coal is also good for your own monthly costs. Help cut energy expenses also for local businesses, schools, and public buildings by turning lights off in empty rooms and bathrooms- instead of having that money go to the corps that are polluting and earning billions off of us and our community members.

8. BUY LOCAL! Support your community businesses, owned and operated by your neighbors. And look for product labels. When it's possible, only buy MADE IN USA!

9. START PAYING OFF ALL YOUR DEBT. Don't fall prey to ultra-consumerism. We are CONSTANTLY bombarded with advertising to BUY BUY BUY! We don't need all that STUFF! Put your money to good use: if you have a mortgage, secure your home first. Pay down the principle by adding any extra money each month- this saves thousands over time! Once it's paid off, no matter how deep recession/depression gets, your home is pure CAPITAL.

10. MAXIMIZE YOUR 401K to only what your company matches. Choose a treasurey money market fund, not a stock fund that you may not understand. 401K's have big penalty fees if you need to withdraw it early, so keep this in mind. Paying off a mortgage has equal value protecting you in retirement.

11. GROW some of your own food when possible. Plant an apple or pear or cherry tree (or all three). These mentioned grow even in colder climates. If you have the blessing of a large garden, learn to plant vegetables. Once grown, this produce is CAPITAL. Trade and/or sell it locally.

12. BUY SMALL CARS! (or used) Unless you have 6 children, you have no need for a gas-guzzling SUV.

13. SHOP GARAGE SALES for things you need, and exchange goods/services on "http://www.craigslist.org.

14. IF YOU HAVE EMPLOYER PRIVATE INSURANCE- LIKE BLUE CROSS- USE IT- GO GET YOUR MAMMOGRAM OR COLONOSCOPY, ANNUAL CHECK UPS AND PAPS.-GET YOUR FLU SHOT THAT IS FREE !!! **IF YOU HAVE MEDICARE OR MEDICAID OR STATE JOB INSURANCE- KEEP UP ON PREVENTIVE CARE BUT DON'T ABUSE IT!**

15. BUY NECESSITIES and GAS in the lower income areas near you, so the tax revenue goes to that area, not the higher income regions where it's not needed.

16. RECYCLE and make your own COMPOST. Make efforts to reduce trash and weight of trash- which not only helps the environment, but cuts expense for trash in your town. The more trash weighs the more taxpayers pay. Demand your public works enforce recycling and composting of yard waste.

17. REDUCE MEAT CONSUMPTION- which is a huge corporate factory lobby for DC (unless locally raised beef).

STEP TWO - PUBLISHING INFORMATION:

We all owe a great debt of gratitude to people like Naomi Wolf, Alex Jones, Lou Dobbs, Dennis Kucinich and Ron Paul for getting this info out to us, and their only reward will be an FBI file. And to great website like OpEdNews for publishing and interviewing Naomi Klein, Naomi Wolf, and many others. We also owe the Youtubers and Diggers who blast this info out everyday.

But now, We have enough information. Our government systems are so corrupt that both leading presidential candidates from both leading parties must campaign on the promise of 'change', and to clean up or fix Washington DC. So the facts are no longer secret, the truth is out.

AND, THE TIME FOR ACTION IS HERE.

It is now time to act upon the facts given us and organize a resistance. We don't have to re-invent the wheel -just follow the blueprint. Organizing requires a journal as Ghandi mentioned. OpEdNews.com is just such a journal. Please donate articles, protest news, action alerts, and when possible, even money, to OpEdNews.com and consider it to be our publishing arm. (Power to the A.R.M.)

Publishing actions / strikes to ourselves though would be fruitless. The only way to create a broad movement is to control the media, and with a small group of dedicated activists, that's a definite possibility. If as few as one thousand people committed to writing / posting articles and Youtube videos, and those same thousand people were to rate, comment, Digg, StumbleUpon, etc., each others work the same day they were published, we would hit the front pages of every social network out there, reaching a large enough audience to have direct actions, strikes and shut downs. (To participate in this project contact the author at realchange@votestrike.com)

Next step in the 'blueprint' is organizing locally to demand national action. The easiest way for you to find a local group is simply to go to http://votestrike.ning.com and fill out a profile with your zip code. We'll contact you with the necessary information for local activists and activities. Or, help organize a Strike group in your town. Please contact the author for details.
As these local groups grow and develop, we will be able to move to the next steps of the blueprint.
